Low but steady
Cosme Tovar was neither born nor raised in Wakajara de Manamo, but he arrived in that Warao community for a job as a schoolteacher. And he never left. In that spot on the map, on the edge of one the caños in Delta Amacuro, he grew into a leader. He started a census and committed himself to having 100 children and youngsters who had never been issued an ID card get one.

His latest visits have made him sad
Deciderio Cepeda got his respect for nature from the Warao Indigenous people, to which he belongs, just as he got his woodworking skills from his father. At the age of twelve, he decided to put both to the service of his community, until he could not anymore because of the surrounding context. Yet, he does not lose hope that one day he will be able to do it again.

To Go Back the Origins to Combat Mercury Poisoning
In 2010, Fundación La Salle confirmed that the waters of the Caura River were poisoned with mercury and, ergo, so were the fish. Measurements taken of Yekuana women showed that members of the ethnic group had mercury in their blood. So, they decided to turn to their ancestral wisdom to find a solution.

Water Creatures Drowned in Mud and Dirt
Añú means ‘People of the Water.’ The Añú are an ethnic group who live on the Sinamaica Lagoon in stilt houses or palafitos, which are believed to have been at the origin of our country’s name. But pollution from contraband and sediment from dragging have muddied the water where life began.

Just Follow One Land, One Flesh, One Blood.
In discovering his identity, Juan La Rosa, a member of the Caquetío indigenous group, became an activist. In the company of his teachers, he witnessed and got involved in the fight to reclaim their ancestral lands from cattle farmers and transnational corporations. He saw many people die, including Yukpa leader Sabino Romero.
